Back in NoVa

Well after 3 years away I am back in the cozy hands of Arlington County. It’s sort of a strange being back but its quickly feeling like home again.

I am continuing to work remotely for UVa while we transition the Health Systems website to the new design (which has just launched).

I’m fairly proud of the new implementation. The underlying template system is significantly more robust then our old one, and the base template employs a completely elastic layer so the accessibility has greatly increased.

While the design is probably not the snazziest thing out there we were required to create a look that could be seamlessly inherited by all the legacy pages created by the Departmental Web Managers. Since they currently have absolute freedom in what they do inside the template there is still to much presentation mixed in with the actual content to allow for a redesign that would change the basic 3 column layout.

That’s the next step, to move the system to an XSL rendered implementation which would allow for WYSIWYG editing while allowing the administrators to maintain control of the markup that ultimately gets generated.

Baby steps, baby steps. Now to find a local job.

Jet Setting

Well I have been slacking tremendously lately with updating this site. I’ve been testing an update to Ez-publish offline to see if the upgrade process will go well. Hopefully I will have sometime to perform the upgrade soon as I hope it will help with some of the speed issues with the site.

I’ve also been traveling like crazy lately for family events so I haven’t had any weekends to get anything done. I’ve been working on re-writing the site structure at work all in CSS and that has me a little burned out to deal with fine tuning templates when I get home.

I’m hoping I can perform this upgrade soon and then finish porting the old pages of the site into the CMS so they can finally be updated. I’m doing lots of cool stuff with CSS lately and I want to start writing about it. I’m also hoping I can redesign this site soon as I’m getting a little sick of the minimalist gray.

In other updates Killer’s last show with Lavajet is on the 16th. She’s decided she had to be smart and get accepted into MIT so we are losing her. I’ll have more info on that soon.

Dave Munn and I went out riding on Monday to enjoy the nice weather. We cruised down some nice tree lined roads out by Monticello, and ended up in Scottsville. It was a really fun ride and probably the longest ride I’ve done on the ET4 so far.

The way back was pretty entertaining. Dave almost hit a deer. The two of us almost hit a rabbit and we encountered one very large chicken.

Lavajet returns to Common Grounds this Friday May 14th. We will be playing with All of 15 from Charlottesville and The Lime Twiggs from DC. This show should hopefully be fun. All the bands have sounds that work pretty well together so I’m hoping for a good time.

I have 170 miles on the ET4 so far.
